Windows XP Media Center Edition SDK
This documentation describes the Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 Software Development Kit (SDK), also known as the Media Center SDK.

The Media Center SDK is designed to help developers create applications and software components that take advantage of features provided by the Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system.

The key features of the Media Center SDK are:

Support for Media Center HTML applications.
Support for Media Center hosted add-ins.
Support for CD/DVD recording add-ins.
Support for Media Center Extenders.
Support for device drivers and other software components that need to receive status information about the state of Media Center.
Support for locale-specific input method editors (IMEs) for Media Center.
Developers are encouraged to refer to the source code of the samples included with this SDK.

The Windows Media Center SDK documents programming technologies that you can use to extend the capabilities of Media Center. This documentation contains the following sections.

About the Windows XP Media Center Edition SDK
Provides a detailed description of the Windows XP Media Center Edition SDK.

Media Center Hosted HTML Applications
A hosted HTML application extends the capabilities of Media Center by adding a new service or media experience that the user can access through the Media Center UI. A hosted application consists of one or more HTML pages that use XML, scripting, ActiveX controls, and other familiar client-side Internet technologies.

Media Center Add-ins
An add-in is a Microsoft .NET Framework assembly that uses the programming interfaces exposed by Media Center to control aspects of the Media Center experience, and to extend the capabilities of Media Center in some way. An add-in also has access to the .NET Framework's System namespace, and to namespaces provided by external assemblies.

CD/DVD Recording Add-ins
A CD/DVD recording add-in provides CD or DVD recording capabilities to Media Center. It uses programming interfaces exposed by Media Center to exchange file and disc information with Media Center, and to retrieve lists of user-selected files for recording onto a CD or DVD.

Click-To-Record Feature
The click-to-record feature enables applications to programmatically schedule the recording of TV programs in Media Center. This feature uses XML code to define the criteria that Media Center uses to locate, schedule, and record the programs.

Media Center Extenders
A Media Center Extender is a hardware device that uses a wired or wireless connection to communicate with a Media Center computer. By using a Media Center Extender, users can access Media Center content from a TV in a remote location. Authors of hosted HTML applications and add-ins must ensure that their components work well with Media Center Extenders.

Media State Aggregation Service
The media state aggregation service (MSAS) is a local COM server that receives media status information from Media Center and distributes it to sinks that have registered with the MSAS service.

Media Center IME Modules
An input method editor (IME) module is a software component that adds a localized version of the on-screen keyboard, keypad, and input method editor to the Media Center shell.

Creating Skins for Party Mode
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 includes Windows Party Mode, a stand-alone executable file that hosts the Windows Media Player ActiveX control. Party Mode provides a way for party guests to use the computer as a jukebox and prevents casual intrusion into other files or programs on the computer. This section describes how to create custom skins for Windows Party Mode.

Creating Custom Label Formats for Windows CD Label Maker
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 includes Microsoft Windows CD Label Maker, which is software that lets users create custom CD labels, inserts, and booklets. Label manufacturers can provide custom CD label layouts for inclusion in Windows CD Label Maker.

Registering DVD Recording Applications with Windows Movie Maker
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 includes Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2.1, which is software that lets users create, edit, and share home movies. By registering their applications with Movie Maker, vendors of DVD recording applications can enable users to record their movies onto recordable DVDs.

Media Center Customization Options for OEMs
Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) who make Media Center Edition computers can customize Media Center in a number of different ways. This section describes the ways in which OEMs can customize Media Center, and provides step-by-step instructions for implementing the various customizations.
