Article ID : 883352
Last Review : October 14, 2004 Revision : 1.0

INTRODUCTION
This Microsoft Knowledge Base article documents known issues and other information about Microsoft Windows Media Center Extender Technologies. These known issues were not documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article at the time of the release of any products in the Windows Media Center Extender Technologies family.

MORE INFORMATION
General
• When you try to watch premium TV channel content that has copy protection enabled, users may receive a full-screen error message that is similar to the following message:
Restricted Content – The video playback devices does not support playback of restricted content.

A software update that enables the viewing of copy-protected TV content on a Media Center Extender device will be available to users by the end of 2004.

• When you start the Media Center Extender, it may seem to stop responding when you receive the following error message:
Connecting to Media Center PC…
If your Media Center PC is within 10 days of the grace period for Microsoft Windows Activation, you may experience this behavior. After you activate Windows by using a valid Product Key, you may have to restart your computer. Additionally, you may have to turn your Media Center Extender on and off.

• If you press mute during TV playback, Closed Captioning may not appear on the TV set even if Media Center has been configured to display Closed Captioning when the audio is muted. This issue may occur if Closed Captioning is not enabled on the TV set. To enable closed captioning, see the User Manual for the TV.

• When you press mute during TV playback, Closed Captioning may not appear on the user’s TV set even if Media Center is configured to display Closed Captioning when the audio is muted. This issue may occur if you are using a component video output cable to connect your Media Center Extender to your TV. The Media Center Extender does not currently support Closed Captioning through component video output. To see Closed Captioning when you are using Media Center Extender, connect the Media Center Extender to the TV by using either an S-video or Composite video output cable.

• When you try to play unsupported video formats, you do not receive a warning dialog box. Instead you receive the “Cannot play Video” message in the Preview thumbnail.

• When you try the play WMV video that contains a WMA Pro audio track, you receive the following error message:
Cannot Play Program - The channel may not be supported. If you cannot tune to any other channel, restart Media Center and/or restart the computer, and then try again.
The Media Center Extender does not currently support playback of WMV video content with WMA Pro audio.
Microsoft Windows Media Encoder may be used to re-encode affected videos into the WMV 9 format with WMA 9 audio. This will play correctly on the Media Center Extender. To obtain the Windows Media Encoder, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com

• 22 kilohertz (kHz) mono MP3 audio files may play at double the expected speed. Media Center Extender does not support playback of 22kHz mono MP3 files. Microsoft Windows Media Encoder may be used to re-encode the audio file into a supported WMA format with an audio sample rate of 32 kHz or more. To obtain Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com

• During playback of some WMV video files, the video may freeze when you press the Skip or Replay button. To work around this issue, press Stop on the remote control, and then select Resume to let the video to continue playback.

• With some poorly encoded MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 videos, the video may turn black during playback. To work around this issue, you can use Microsoft Windows Media Encoder to re-encode the affected MPEG videos into the WMV format. These videos will play correctly on the Media Center Extender. To obtain Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com

Networking
• Poor wireless networking performance may be caused by using wireless equipment that is not Designed for Media Center Edition (DfMCE) logo certified. You should replace an older 802.11g only router with a newer DfMCE certified dual-band 802.11g and 802.11a router to ensure compatibility with current gear while providing additional uninterrupted bandwidth for the Media Center Extender. Your Media Center Extender can connect to either 802.11g or 802.11a. Optimal performance can be achieved when your Media Center Extender connects by using 802.11a while other wireless devices, such as portable computers or desktops, connect by using 802.11g.

• Media Center Extender devices connected to the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 system through a D-Link DI-784 wireless access point or router with “Dynamic Turbo” mode enabled will cause connection failures. Media Center Extender devices currently do not support “Dynamic Turbo” mode. This mode can be turned off using the D-Link router administration page. Contact the router manufacturer for any additional assistance.

• TV or video may experience frame drop or “choppiness” if proprietary speed boosting modes such as "SuperA”, "SuperG”, or “Turbo” are enabled on the wireless access point. To prevent this issue, disable these proprietary modes on the wireless access point as described in the manufactures documentation.

• Video playback on a Media Center Extender may appear choppy on an 802.11g wireless network if slower 802.11b devices are connected to the same wireless network or if other devices interfere with the signal. These devices could include cordless phones, microwaves, or a nearby neighbor’s 802.11b devices. Try to remove the 802.11b devices from the wireless network or connect the Media Center Extender through wired Ethernet to the network to minimize this effect.

• Media Center Extender devices connected to the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 system through a D-link DI-774 wireless router may become disconnected when the user starts TV playback. This is a known issue with earlier versions of the firmware that is used in the DI-774 wireless router. To minimize this issue, contact the router manufacturer for help with downloading and installing the latest firmware revision for the wireless router from the router manufacturer’s Web site.

• If you configure a firewall after you installed a Media Center Extender, the firewall may close ports that the Media Center Extender needs open. This can render the Media Center Extender non-functional. If a firewall is configured before you set up the Media Center Extender, the Media Center Extender Setup program will detect it and help the user with the configuration. If a firewall is configured after setting up Media Center Extender, the user must manually configure their firewall to open the following ports:
• 3776
• 3390
• 5555
• 7777

• You may receive the following error message on the Media Center Extender when you work with earlier network card device drivers:
Network Congestion – There is not enough network bandwidth to provide a good TV experience. For more information, see Help. Would you like to watch TV anyway?
Contact the system manufacture for help with downloading and installing the latest network card driver in the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 system to minimize this issue.

Media Center Technical Support
Because Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition is included with your hardware device or system, the hardware manufacturer provides technical support and assistance for this software. If you require technical help with Windows XP Media Center Edition, contact your manufacturer directly. The manufacturer is best qualified to support the software that the manufacturer has installed on the hardware.
