I just got finished helping a friend with his Linksys Media Extender and we had the same problem. The WMV support is extremely limited.
WMV7: doesn't play
WMV8: doesn't play
WMV9, complex decoding: doesn't play
WMV9 advanced: doesn't play
Any resolution greater than 640W and 480H: doesn't play (it won't even play standard def PAL resolutions!! nor 720x480 NTSC even!)
WMA Pro (9 and 9.1): doesn't play (so all movies will have to encoded in stereo)
WMV Pro: no chance! Requires HD resolutions and Complex Encoding to even bring this option up in WM Encoder.
Interlaced video: untested
Non square-pixels do play, but are rendered as square (so if u were to encode your 16:9 movies which are 720x480 on dvd, they would be played "squished" horizontally).
What does play:
WMV9, Simple Decoder complexity only, WMA9.1 standard audio up to 640x480, with square pixels.
We tested bitrates up to 1mbps successfully.
