classMCE™ SDK for Media Center is a Software Development Kit for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. It allows you to quickly create applications that are integrated within the Media Center experience and without extra user interface coding required. Unlike other SDKs, this does not include pages of javascript to include with your application. Rather, all script logic is left for your application logic, while all the navigational control is encapsulated in DHMTL behaviors enabled by a proprietary .NET compiled component that can be redistributed with your application. Your user interface can be kept in very simple .htm files for ease of maintenance.

classMCE™ SDK for Media Center

classMCE™ SDK for Media Center is a Software Development Kit for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004.  It allows you to quickly create applications that are integrated within the Media Center experience and without extra user interface coding required.  Unlike other SDKs, this does not include pages of javascript to include with your application.  Rather, all script logic is left for your application logic, while all the navigational control is encapsulated in behaviors enabled by a proprietary .NET compiled component that can be redistributed with your application.  Your user interface can be kept in very simple .htm files for ease of maintenance.

The SDK contains everything you need to write and distribute an MCE style application.  It includes a set of DHTML behaviors, a cascading style sheet, and a re-usable ActiveX control which leverages the Microsoft .NET Framework Common Language Runtime.

The SDK also includes a fully function “My News“ application.  The application downloads headlines from a leading news service, reformats them into the media center experience, and is able to download detailed stories including pictures on demand, reformatting for the ten foot user interface experience.  This example application shows how easy it is to write media center applications and makes use of XML/XSL reformatting that could be quickly reused in your own applications.  Full source code for this application is included (although you'll find not much coding is really required).

The SDK is licensed free for for your own non-commercial use.  You may also freely distribute applications with the SDK as long as they are freeware (without limitation) and open source.  The SDK is available for license (please enquire for terms) in commercial applications, but the downloadable version on this site may not be used in shareware or applications for which any type of license or use fee is charged.

Thanks for the feedback.

I really did this to make some simple applications quick and easy (I am currently running recipes, news, email, calendar, etc.) without a lot of unnecessary functionality.  I find that with this SDK and something as simple as XML/XSL stylesheet I can do most of the apps I want.

The reason for sharing it on here is simply because I'd like to see what sort of applications other people think of and to hopefully influence others to use simpler architectures using some of the really neat things built into the Internet Explorer version we are all using.  I did wait to make sure I had really thought through the architecture before release so its not meant to look professional just a well founded architecture.  I do need to improve performance still on some machines (curiously only certain configurations) so it is still a beta.

As for MCE 2005, no I havent joined the beta for that yet, but I understand the development will be simplified anyway, so this is somewhat of a stop gap.  Since everything the classMCE SDK is layered and uses functions that are native to Internet Explorer (and hence will continue to be supported in MCE2005) it should be pretty easy to update it without requiring any changes to applications already written with it.

If anyone needs any help writing a simple app with this SDK just let me know.
